Love this Oracle Usable Apps contribution by co-worker Karen Scipi, called “Designing the Language Experience of the User Interface”. Karen makes some great points about how the choice of language in the UI needs to reflect the demands of consumerized technology and simplicity in the enterprise.
Word choice can have a major impact. Take a look at the following screen from the Oracle HCM Cloud Release 7. It shows a simplified UI page called “My Details”.
Seems a small detail, but why not “Your Details”? It’s because the choice of pronoun to use in a UI needs to be as thoughtfully designed as the interaction is. For example, did you know that single word changes could improve user action by over 25%?
Such one-word changes increase customers’ return on investment in applications, and cannot be overlooked. Let’s not forget that small button change that made a $300 million difference in business for one customer, either!
A powerful message for anyone who feels safe about discounting language from user experience considerations!
